Free-to-air receivers for C-band and Ku-band satellite. The good stuff runs Enigma2 or clean proprietary firmware, does blind scan, and plays nice with DiSEqC and H-to-H motors. The community standard right now is DVB-S2X — make sure any new receiver supports it or you'll miss HEVC transponders entirely.
Not all satellite receivers on Amazon are created equal. Cheap import boxes often have poor blind scan performance, weak DiSEqC motor control, and firmware that never gets updated. The units listed here are ones the FTA community — SatelliteGuys, Rick Caylor's forum — actually uses and recommends. Pay a little more, get a box that works.

C-band sits at 3.7–4.2 GHz. You need a quality PLL LNB — cheap DRO units drift and cause headaches on narrow transponders. Norsat is the go-to for serious installs. Gulf Coast humidity is brutal on connectors — seal everything with self-amalgamating tape and check center pins annually.
C-band is under serious pressure from 5G carriers who bought the 3.7–3.98 GHz range. If you're anywhere near a metro area on the Gulf Coast, a band pass filter is now essentially mandatory. See the 5G FILTERS tab.

Norsat 5150F PLL C-Band LNB
The workhorse of serious C-band installs. PLL oscillator at ±150kHz stability — dramatically better than cheap DRO units. 15K noise temperature. 3.4–4.2 GHz input. What we install on Gulf Coast big dishes.

Ku-band (10.7–12.75 GHz) is where most modern FTA action is. The Gulf Coast gets heavy rain fade on Ku — a larger dish (90cm+) and a quality low-noise LNBF significantly reduce outages. Universal LNBFs (9.75/10.6 GHz dual LO) cover full FSS and DBS Ku ranges. Dual-output lets you run two receivers off one dish without a multiswitch.
Gulf Coast summers mean regular rain fade on Ku. A 90cm or larger offset dish with a quality 0.3dB NF LNBF dramatically reduces outages compared to a cheap 0.7dB unit on a 75cm dish. The Invacom SNH-031 is the community standard on SatelliteGuys for good reason.

Invacom SNH-031 Universal Single LNBF
Consistently recommended on SatelliteGuys as the best Ku LNBF for FTA use. Universal dual-LO (9.75/10.6 GHz), 0.3dB noise figure, excellent phase noise. Locks on weak signals that cheaper LNBFs miss entirely. The community standard.

Linear actuators are the muscle of a polar mount — they physically drive the dish along the Clarke Belt arc. Size matters: 18-inch actuator for a 6ft dish, 24-inch for 8-10ft, 36-inch for larger. Venture Manufacturing makes the most reliable consumer actuators. The controller box is what translates remote presses into motor movement and stores satellite positions.
Gulf Coast installs: salt air gets into the actuator tube and the inner rod seizes. This is the #1 actuator failure here — and it usually looks like a dead motor when it's actually corrosion. Annual marine-grade grease on the rod and intact boot seal prevents this entirely. A seized actuator can often be worked free before buying a replacement.

DiSEqC 1.2 · POSITIONER · 99-SAT
Titanium Satellite ASC1 Positioner
DiSEqC 1.2 compatible — lets your FTA receiver control the dish directly without a separate controller. Popular on SatelliteGuys. Known quirk: update firmware before installing or you may hit the "can't read from device" bug.

NOTEUpdate firmware first
DiSEqC is the protocol your receiver uses to control LNBFs, switches, and motors. A 4-port DiSEqC switch lets one receiver connect to four different LNBs or dishes. H-to-H (horizon-to-horizon) motors swing a smaller Ku dish along the arc using DiSEqC 1.2/USALS — simpler than a polar mount + separate controller.

SG2100 H-to-H DiSEqC 1.2 Satellite Dish Motor
Rick Caylor's recommended H-to-H motor for dishes up to 1.2 meters. DiSEqC 1.2 and USALS — most E2 receivers control it directly, no separate mover box needed. Available in 42mm and 50mm shaft. Works perfectly with the GEOSATpro 1.2M dish.

GEOSATpro 2x1 22KHz Tone Control Switch
Simple A/B for two LNBFs or two dishes. Most common use: C-band and Ku-band on the same receiver. Cleaner than the ground loop issues you get with basic splitters. DC pass-through on both ports.
PORTS2 in / 1 out
PROTOCOLDiSEqC 1.0
The biggest issue in C-band right now. Carriers rolled out 5G in the 3.7–3.98 GHz band — right in the middle of C-band satellite receive. If you're seeing pixelation, dropouts, or your receiver can't lock on C-band signals it used to get fine, 5G interference is almost certainly the cause. A band pass filter installed at the LNB output blocks the 5G frequencies while passing the satellite IF. Not optional in most Gulf Coast metro areas anymore.
Install the BPF as close to the LNB output as possible — before any cable run. The interference is RF at the dish, not in the cable. Putting it at the receiver end does nothing. Use a weatherproof filter rated for outdoor use.

The feed horn collects the reflected signal from the dish surface and guides it into the LNB. For C-band prime-focus dishes, a scalar ring feed horn is standard. The scalar ring creates the correct illumination pattern to match the dish's f/D ratio. Wrong f/D = real signal loss even with a perfect LNB. Most 8-12ft dishes are f/D 0.35–0.45.

Gulf Coast coax lives a brutal life. Use direct burial RG-6 quad shield for standard runs, RG-11 for anything over 150 feet. Every outdoor connector needs UV-rated jacket and properly sealed F-connectors. A bad F-connector at the dish is the single most common cause of intermittent signal issues we see — costs $0.50 and 2 minutes to fix.
Check the coax connection at the LNB first when troubleshooting any signal issue. Salt air oxidizes center pins fast. If the center conductor looks dull or grey instead of bright copper, cut and re-terminate. Do this before touching any alignment.

You cannot properly align a dish without a meter. Running back and forth using the receiver's on-screen display is guessing, not alignment. A signal meter lets one person align a dish in 15 minutes.
